DVTS Workshop Bob Riddle Bob Riddle

Agenda DVTS Welcome - DVTS from 50,000 feet DVTS Developers Media streaming issues in Japan - Hiroshi Esaki DVTS Update - Kazunori Sugiura Multiple DVTS stream synchronization - Hisamatsu Tuyoshi Dynamic Routing aggregation in Stream based infrastrucutre - Katsuhiro Horiba Methods on unification of video streaming format using DVTS - Kazuhiro Mishima Typical usage in Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology - Takeshi Sakurada DVGuide, DVTuner, DVTS Appliance(s) Hands on Workshop

What can I do with DVTS? you can send & receive High Quality A/V It doesn’t require funny, expensive machines It doesn’t involve IP issues (royalties) It doesn’t require funny, expensive cameras It does require a network capable of 30 mpbs all you need is a capable Network and … a DV capable camera (HandiCam, DVCAM, DVCPro) with IEEE1394 (firewire) capability DV receiver (DV Player, TV) that is firewire capable Or an analog/digital converter(s) if using a non-firewire capable camera/receiver a computer with IEEE1394 (firewire) capability

What is DV? Digital Video, put simply, is video that has been digitally sampled Digital Video comes in many formats and data rates: CCIR :2:2 Digital mbps MPEG2 up to 100Mbps High Definition – SMPTE 292M, ATSC rates, and Mbps Streaming Video: Real, WM, Quicktime/Darwin/Sorensen, etc.

What is firewire? “Firewire” developed by Apple Computer It is really a high-speed serial data bus IEEE 1394 is the published specification for the high-speed serial bus 400mbps over a distance of 4.5meters Double twisted pair, 28 AWG wire Longer distances possible using higher gauges and slower data rates 800mbps for 2 nd generation IEEE 1394 DVTS requires high-speed serial bus to transfer DV from the camera to the PC! Maybe USB 2.0 is a new possibility … ?

It looks like this:

What can I do with it? National Internet2 Day Several schools used DV/IP stream Fall Member Meeting Rehearsal (Indiana State Museum, IU, CIM) Badnwidth matters! (UPenn Museum) Video “Conference” Both P2P and multipoint (using multicast) Master Class – music instruction Internet2 “DV Guide” Access Grid integration (APAN work)

DVTS Update DVTS Developers Media streaming issues in Japan - Hiroshi Esaki DVTS Update - Kazunori Sugiura Multiple DVTS stream synchronization - Hisamatsu Tuyoshi Dynamic Routing aggregation in Stream based infrastrucutre - Katsuhiro Horiba Methods on unification of video streaming format using DVTS - Kazuhiro Mishima Typical usage in Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology - Takeshi Sakurada

DVGuide DVTuner DVTS Appliances Comet PMC - Fujitsu Research Mac-Mini

Mac-mini DVTS Appliane is a $500 DVTS appliance possible? Mac-mini - limit to a single firewire port No muss, no fuss No monitor, keyboard, mouse required Configure, plug it in, then phone-home Web browser used for control example

Mac-mini Web page

A DVTS “Appliance” for normal people Affordable Recognizable user interface Ready for prime time Internet2 test channel is evidence May require breakout box, echo cancellation equipment … the same MPEG2 boxes, etc.

Hands on Time! Install DVTS on your machine Play with the CometDVIP machine Take Mac-mini DVTS for a test drive Work on the hard stuff: Multicast issues, testing, validation Audio – quality, echo, mixers Lighting – match investment to the event
