What unit do we use to measure energy? How much is one joule? – The energy needed to lift an apple 1 meter. – The energy you release as heat in 1/100 th of a second as you just sit there. – The kinetic energy of a tennis ball moving at 14 mph. – Energy in the sunlight that hits this piece of paper in one second. How do we know energy is given off in the combustion of a hydrocarbon? How could we measure or capture this energy?
We can capture the heat energy in a pop can with water in it and measure the temperature change of the water. A device that measures the heat of chemical reactions is called a calorimeter. We need to figure out how many joules are released, but the thermometer measures degrees Celsius.
Can you come up with an equation for this?
Examples How many joules will it take to raise the temperature of 400 g of water 20 degrees Celsius? How many kilojoules is that? 33.6 kJ
