Some facts about Pandas Do you know these facts about pandas? Origin : Habitat: Diet: Digestive system: Lifespan: Weight: Conservation status: How long have they been on this planet?

What helps pandas to survive in China?

Why they are endangered? My prediction is:

Essential questions – for the whole unit Do you know many animals that are native to Australia? What helps them to survive in Australia? What are their living status like in 21st century?

Animal Adaptations

Objectives of the lesson At the end of the lesson, -we understand different concepts related to animal adaptation to the environment. -we can relate these concepts to a situation. (We can give examples in relation to these concepts.) e.g. adaptations, what does it mean? examples? behavioral adaptations, what does it mean? Examples? -we understand different strategies animals use to adapt themselves to survive in the nature. e.g. camouflage, chemical defenses

Tasks for lesson 1 : 1. Vocabulary Splash - Go to - Break into groups of 3 or 4. - As a group discuss different terms/concepts we came across in this lesson. These are the words we are going to put into the Wordle. For example: adaptation, habitat … - Individually, we create a Wordle with your preferred style. - Print it out and glue it into the science journal 2. Can I relate these words to a situation? - Discuss these words as a group. - Under the Wordle in your science journal, each group member chooses 3 different words, writing the meaning in your own words and giving one example. For example: instinct: a species’ natural response to specific situation. For example, when winter comes, some birds travel a long way to a warmer place and then come back the next year when winter is over. 3. Fill out a KWLH chart through out the lesson and glue it into the science journal at the end of the lesson.

Lesson one: Adaptations What I knowWhat I want to knowWhat I’ve learntHow can I learn more

Explore the following resources fill out a form in the next page. -adaptations.htm

Fill out a form while watching the video clip Essential words related to adaptations I know it well and can explain it and use it. (understand what it means) I can relate to the situation in the video. (can give examples from the video) Can relate to a situation not in the video. (can give your own examples ) I don’t fully understa nd the word I don’t know the word at all.

Need more background information? Notes

Sorting out the information According to the video clip, how many types of adaptations are there? -

Physical adaptations are body structures that allow an animal to find and consume food, defend itself, and to reproduce its species. Physical adaptations help an animal survive in its environment. Hey! I’m a walking stick. I look just like a stick you’d find on the ground. © A. Weinberg

Sorting out the information What are the strategies of physical adaptations? -

Physical adaptation Camouflage (use of color in a surrounding) The chameleon can change its color to match its surroundings. Can you do that?

Mimicry (looking or sounding like another living organism) The Viceroy butterfly uses mimicry to look like the Monarch butterfly. Can you tell them apart? Poisonous Not poisonous Physical adaptation I’m the Monarch! I’m the Viceroy!

Chemical defenses (like venom, ink, sprays) Physical adaptation

Body coverings & parts (claws, beaks, feet, armor plates, skulls, teeth) Physical adaptations The elephant’s trunk is a physical adaptation that helps it to clean itself, eat, drink, and to pick things up.

Each organism has unique methods of adapting to its environment by means of different actions. Behavioral Adaptations are animals’ actions. Remember that Physical Adaptations are body structures.

Sorting out the information What are the strategies of behavioral adaptations? -

We can divide Behavioral Adaptations into two groups: Instinctive Learned These behaviors happen naturally & don’t have to be learned. These behaviors must be taught.

Instinctive behaviors happen naturally & don’t need to be learned = Finding shelter Methods of gathering & storing food Defending oneself Raising young Hibernating Migrating

Learned behaviors Obtained by interacting with the environment and cannot be passed on to the next generation except by teaching. =

Recap: In this lesson, we have learned about animal adaptations. There are 2 ways to describe adaptations: Physicaland Behavioral

Physical adaptations are body structures. Some examples of physical adaptations are: Camouflage Mimicry Body coverings & parts Chemical defenses

Behavioral Adaptations are animals’ actions. Behavioral Adaptations can be Instinctive or Learned.
