What is Problem Gambling Gambling becomes a problem when it causes disruptions in any major area of life: psychological, physical, social or vocational.

Signs of Problem Gamblers  Secretive about his/her gambling habits, and defensive when confronted  Restless or irritable when not gambling  Gambling to escape problems  Lying to family and friends, teachers about gambling  Borrowing money often  Trying unsuccessfully to control, cut-back, or stop gambling  Committing crimes to finance gambling  Increasing bet amounts when gambling to achieve the desired high  “Chasing” losses with more gambling

Oregon Prevalence Study  More than 74,000 Oregon Adults (2.7%) are believed to meet criteria for being problem or pathological gambler  One in 25 Oregon teens (13-17 yrs. old) experienced gambling related problems; that’s more than 10,000 Oregon youth  One in 10 teens is an at-risk gambler  About 6,000 Oregonians over 62 years old (1.2%) are believed to meet the criteria for problem or pathological gambling
