Intelligent Large Scale Sensing Systems (ILS 3 ) initiative Initiative Status and Activities Kevin M. McNeill, PhD Research Assoc. Professor Director, Computer Engineering Research Laboratory Electrical & Computer Engineering University of Arizona

Agenda Guiding Model Progress –Collaborative Laboratory –Integration with Education –Research Projects Next Steps

Sensor Networks & Fusion Levels Joint Directors of Laboratories (JDL) Fusion Model – (DoD Labs) Sensing Observations Source Pre- processing Entity Refinement Situation Refinement Process Refinement Visualization Knowledge, Decision Support Raw, Low-level observation events Abstraction Level We are interested in systems with 1,000s of sensors

Progress ILS 3 Collaborative Laboratory (ECE 405) –Obtained sensor development kits –Initiated development of the sensor test-bed for our confined space tracking problem –Sent students to training on sensor platforms –Initiated discussion for collaboration with Computer Science Submitted $2.5M NSF multi-investigator proposal for sensing systems research Developing $5M NSF proposal in collaboration with industry for sensor related mobile networking –Software defined radio –Programmable radios –DARPA neXt Generation (XG) spectrum management

Integration with Education Architecture Framework being developed in ECE 678 by MS & PhD students

Progress Finalizing details for Sensor Fusion Research project Funding of ~$200K –Negotiating donation of ~$1M in computing equipment –Will deploy multi-layer fusion system in the ILS 3 Collaborative Laboratory –Primary focus is Layer 2 fusion Database representing 4 hours of sensor event messages for a “scenario” provided by the sponsor Goal: create AI-based algorithms to achieve Level 2 fusion across hundreds of elements (with thousands of observations) in real-time Includes strong Visualization element –Sponsor by USArmy Battle Labs –Potential partners: SGI, Apple, USA Information Systems Engineering Command

Brute Force Fusion Research

NEXT STEPS Finish outfitting the collaborative Lab –Complete the sensor test-bed –Demonstrate working system Set up Brute Force Fusion project

Thank You
