Choosing and caring for clothes Chapter 19-2

Choosing Clothes That Look Good on You Elements of Design Color, line, texture, and form These are factors that affect the appearance of a garment and influences the way you look in your clothes.

Color Color reveals something about your looks, feelings, and moods. Colors can help you enhance your best features

Color Characteristics Color has 3 distinct characteristics. Hue- name given to a color. Value- refers to lightness or darkness of a color. Intensity- brightness or dullness of a color.

Color Wheel Is a tool that shows the relationship between colors. Primary cannot be created from other colors. ex. Yellow, Blue, and Red. Secondary colors are equal amounts of two primary colors.

Color Schemes Monochromatic are shades and tints of one colors. Three common color schemes are monochromatic, analogous, and complementary. Monochromatic are shades and tints of one colors. Analogous are colors next to each other on the color wheel. Complementary are combining colors directly across from each other on the color wheel.

Warm colors are those colors related to red, orange, and yellow. Warm and Cool Colors Warm colors are those colors related to red, orange, and yellow. Cool colors are those colors related to blue, green, and violet.

Choosing your best colors When choosing colors for clothes, keep your skin tone, hair and eye color, and body shape in mind.

The Other Design Elements Line, textures, and form also effect how your clothes will look on you.

Line Line is a design element that gives direction to a design. Structural lines are seams. They are created as the various pieces of the garment are sewn together. Decorative lines are those added to the fabric or garment to make it visually appealing.

Texture Garments made from soft and silky fabrics slenderize a figure. Rough or smooth, shiny or dull, crisp or soft, bulky or silky. Garments made from soft and silky fabrics slenderize a figure. Some fabrics are crisp and stiff. They are great for making the body appear larger. Fabrics with dull texture absorbs light and have a slenderizing effect.

Form The shape of an object is its form. Clothes that produce a full form may make you appear larger and heavier. A tubular form may make you appear taller. The bell-shaped form, which flatters most people, is created by flared designs.
