THEMATIC ESSENCE OF UDDHAVA-GÉT Ä Lesson 10: The Limitations of Mystic Yoga Perfection THEMATIC ESSENCE OF UDDHAVA-GÉT Ä Lesson 10: The Limitations of Mystic Yoga Perfection (SB Canto 11, Chapter 15) 11/26/2011Carucandra Dasa 1

Chapter Highlights  In response to Uddhava’s question, Krsna describes the 8 primary and 10 secondary mystic perfections, their characteristics, and what type of dhäraëa, or meditation is to be practiced for the attainment of each one.  These mystic perfections are developed by fixing one’s mind in yoga, but are ultimately detrimental to cultivation of love of Godhead.  So why is Uddhava asking Krsna to explain and why did Krsna spoke about them? (Contnd) 11/26/2011Carucandra Dasa 2

 All these mystic perfections are automatically offered to a pure devotee, but he does not accept them.  Unless utilized in the devotional service of the Lord, these have no value.  The 8 siddhés, or mystic perfections are primary dhäraëas because they have been manifested from His internal potency, and are thus transcendental.  The other ten meditations are mundane, begin born from the material modes of nature (goodness). 11/26/2011Carucandra Dasa 3

11/26/2011Carucandra Dasa 4 The 8 Primary siddhésCharacteristics How are they developed in serving for Krsna? aëimä Becoming smaller than the smallest—pertains to the body Fixing one’s mind on Krsna’s atomic form, the Supersoul  enables one to enter within any material object laghimä becoming lighter than the lightest—pertains to the body Understanding that Krsna is subtler than time and He expands to become the time factor mahimä Becoming greater than the greatest—pertains to the body Fixing one’s mind on the Lord situated in the mahat- tattva as the Supersoul of the total material elements  realization of the entire universe non-different from Krsna präpti One acquires whatever one desires—related to the senses Fixing one’s mind on the Lord as He is situated within the false ego  revival of one’s relationship with the Absolute Truth  all of his senses become engaged in His service präkämya Enables one to experience any enjoyable object By fixed meditation on the Supreme Lord who is the soul of the mahat-tattva éçitä ä Enables one to manipulate the subpotencies of mäyä By meditation of the Supersoul, the personification of the time and the controller of the 3 modes of material nature  the devotee can control the material bodies of others vaçitä Enables one to be unimpeded by the modes of nature ää By meditation on His form as Näräryana, who is full of 6 opulences and who is fully transendental  endowed with His nature kämavasäyitä Enables one to obtain anything he may desire ä When one dovetails all of his desires in the service of the eternal Kämadeva, the Supreme Personality of Godhead

The 10 secondary mystic perfections 1. anurmimattva, or free oneself from hunger and thirst 2. dura- ç ravana, or hear from the distance 3. dura-darsana, or see fro the distance 4. icch ä nurupa dhera gati, or move one’s body as he desires 5. icch ä nurupa ä k ä ra grahana, or take whatever shape one desires 6. parak ä ya-pravesa, or enter into another’s body 7. svecch ä mrtyu, or die according to one’s will 8. deva krid ä darsana, or witness the pastimes of the demigods with the Apsar ä s 9. sankalpita pad ä rtha pr ä pti, or act however one desires 10. apratihat ä ä jn ä, or give orders whose fulfillment is unimpeded 11/26/2011Carucandra Dasa 5

 These ten secondary mystic siddhés produced from the modes of material nature are the power to free oneself from hunger and thirst, to hear and see things happening in a distant place, to move one’s body at the speed of the mind, to assume any form one desires, to enter the bodies of others, to die according to one’s will, to witness the pastimes of the demigods with the Apsaräs, to act however one desires, and to give orders whose fulfillment is unimpeded.  Knowledge of the past, present and the future, being undisturbed by heat and cold, understanding the intensions of others, neutralization of the powers of fire, the sun, water, prison, and so on. (Contd) 11/26/2011Carucandra Dasa 6

 “Whatever mystic perfections can be achieved as a result of good birth, herbs, austerities, and mantras can be achieved by engagement in My devotional service. In fact, one cannot attain the actual perfection of yoga by any other means” (34)  For example, by taking birth as a demigod, one is automatically endowed with many mystic perfections.  Being born in Siddhaloka, one gets all the 8 principle siddh é s; being born as a fish, bird, etc, one can swim under water, fly in the sky, respectively.  The Supreme Lord alone is the object of various paths of perfection. 11/26/2011Carucandra Dasa 7
