FCAT GRIDDING

Middle School Grids Grades 6 and 7 Grades 7 and 8

Answer boxes Fraction bar Decimal point Number bubbles

Answer boxes Fraction bar/Negative Sign Decimal point Number bubbles MA.7.A.3.2 and MA.7.A.3.3 All 8 th grade grids will be negative grids

How to Complete the Response Grid 1.Work the problem and find the answer. 2.Write your answer in the answer boxes at the top of the grid. Print your answer with the first digit in the left answer box. Do NOT leave a blank answer box in the middle of an answer. Be sure to write a decimal point or fraction bar in the answer box if it is a part of the answer.

How to Complete the Response Grids 3.Fill in a bubble under each box in which you wrote your answer. Fill in one and ONLY one bubble for each box. Do NOT fill in a bubble under an unused box. Fill each bubble by making a solid black mark that completely fills the circle. You MUST fill in the bubbles accurately to receive credit for your answer.

Gridding a Whole Number =60 60 OR 60

Gridding a Decimal or

Gridding a Negative Number

- 5

Gridding a Fraction 3 / 5

What to do with a mixed number... You can NOT write a mixed number in an answer grid. If your answer is a mixed number y You must convert it to: Ex: / 2

7 1 / 4 INCORRECT Be aware……………………

7 th and 8 th grade: Percent Problems If the question asks ‘what is the percent’, grid in the answer without moving the decimal point. Lisa bought lunch for her friends. The cost of the lunch was $64.00 including tax. Lisa left a $8.00 tip. What percent tip did Lisa leave ? Set up a proportion: Because the problem asked for what percent, just grid the answer DO NOT move the decimal to 0.125!

Gridding Percents What percent of 100 is 9? Answer: 9% INCORRECT 9 / 1 0 0

Gridding Repeating Decimals…….. Answer: Incorrect correct

Grid the answer or

Reducing and Rounding Issues Reducing--- We recommend: Do not reduce fractions UNLESS the directions tell you to reduce to lowest terms OR if the answer doesn’t fit in the grid unless you reduce it. Rounding--- We recommend: Don’t round UNLESS the directions tell you to do so.

The answer is Can you find the error? 6 3/

The answer is Can you find the error?

The answer is 318 Can you find the error? 3 1 8

The answer is Do you see the mistake?

The answer is 43% Do you see the mistake? 3 4

The answer is 54 Do you see the error? 5 4

The answer is What’s wrong?

1 2 The answer is 3 / 8 What’s wrong?

Common Gridding Mistakes Adding extra zeros Bubbling more than one number in a column Adding unnecessary spaces Forgetting to bubble Omitting the decimal point Gridding improper fractions incorrectly Gridding percents incorrectly Adding extra symbols outside/inside of the grid

Now it’s your turn

Grid the following answers: (Solve first when necessary) / ¼ 6. 7 – What is 20% of x / ⅜ is what percent of 160? is what percent of 125? Round your answer to the nearest whole percent ÷ 55 Round your answer to the nearest hundredth.

Solution for #8: What is 20% of 80? 100x = 1600 x = 16

Solution to #13: 40 is what percent of 160? 160x = 4000 x = 25

Solution to problem #14: 18 is what percent of 125? Round your answer to the nearest whole percent. 125x = 1800 x = 14.4 Rounded: 14
