Silicon Immersion Gratings Prism-shaped reflection grating The high refractive index (n=3.4) of silicon –Keep the high spectral resolution with a much smaller beam size. Silicon lithography –enables continuous spectral coverage. –coarse gratings can be fabricated by silicon lithographic methods. Fig.3. Schematic figure of an immersion grating.

Summary GMTNIRS will be a key to solve various astrophysical questions and provide a revolution of a spectrograph, particularly in wavelength coverage. GMTNIRS will use relatively well developed technologies, but the outcome will give a significant achievement in the IR spectroscopy. GMTNIRS will improve the grating quality to be compact and robust by using silicon immersion gratings.
