Some useful tips for revision and editing

Modifiers  Words, phrases or clauses that bring detail and life to a sentence Stephen dropped his fork. Let’s add detail and see what we come up with.

Modifiers Poor Stephen, who just wanted a quick meal to get through his three-hour biology lab, quickly dropped his fork on the cafeteria tray, gagging with disgust as a tarantula wiggled out of his cheese omelet, a sight requiring a year of therapy before Stephen could eat eggs again. There is an awful lot of “modification” now. Do we need it all?

Tense Shifting

Verbs indicate the time of an action, event or condition by changing its form. Using tenses in a piece of writing makes it possible to indicate the complex time relationships of actions, events, and/or conditions Mixing up too many tenses in a piece of writing makes it difficult to understand the complex time relationships of actions, events, and/or conditions **When writing about literature, always refer to the story in the present tense!**

When I wake up, the other side of the bed was cold. My fingers stretching out, seeking Prim’s warmth but finding only the rough canvas cover of the mattress. She must have had bad dreams and climbs in with our mother. Of course, she does. This was the day of the reaping. I am propping myself up on one elbow. There’s enough light in the bedroom to see them. My little sister, Prim, had curled up on her side, cocooned in my mother’s body, their cheeks pressed together. In sleep, my mother looked younger, still worn but not so beaten-down. Prim’s face is as fresh as a raindrop, as lovely as the primrose for which she was naming. My mother was very beautiful once, too. Or so they told me. Sat at Prim’s knees, guarding her, was the world’s ugliest cat. Mashed-in nose, half of one ear missing, eyes the color of rotting squash. Prim names him Buttercup, insisting that his muddy yellow coat matched the bright flower. He hated me. Or at least distrusts me. Even though it was years ago, I thought he still remembers how I was trying to drown him in a bucket when Prim brought him home. Scrawny kitten, belly swollen with worms, crawling with fleas. The last thing I need was another mouth to feed. But Prim begs so hard, cried even, I had to let him stay. It turned out okay. My mother got rid of the vermin, and he’s a born mouser. Even caught the occasional rat. Sometimes, when I clean a kill, I am feeding Buttercup the entrails. He has stopped hissing at me.
