Introduction Ancient Egypt was located in a region in the northeastern part of Africa. Ancient Egypt had one of the most wonderful civilizations of the Ancient world. There are several legacies of ancient Egypt. Hieroglyphs are considered one of the most important legacies because of its contribution, its significance, and because they help us understand Egyptian writings.

Origin Hieroglyphs are the “footprints” of the world of the Ancient Egypt. Hieroglyphs are the reason why we know about Ancient Egypt, because we lost everything we knew about them, including the knowledge of their language. “Knowledge of the meaning of hieroglyphic symbols was soon lost and remained a mystery until the early 1800's.” Its origins also made it more special to Egypt and made it more fascinating. “They used hieroglyphic writing primarily for religious inscriptions on temples and stone monuments and to record the words and deeds of royalty. In fact, the Egyptians called their writing the words of God.“ Due to the importance of Egypt and the influence of Egypt during ancient times, hieroglyphs are considered an Egyptian legacy.

Contribution Hieroglyphs were a major factor to ancient Egypt due to its contribution to the society. Hieroglyphs’ contribution to the society is so important that probably without it we wouldn’t have any information about them. They might say more of what we know about Egypt or even about their community. They may be so important that without then we wouldn’t know the tiniest amount of ancient Egypt’s greatness. “Egyptian hieroglyphs included determinatives. Determinatives indicated the class of object to which the preceding hieroglyphs belonged. An example of a determinative might be the symbol for water placed after the name of a specific lake. Such symbols helped explain and emphasize the meaning of other hieroglyphs.“ In other words, hieroglyphs weren’t just images but were used to express complex ideas.

Significance Hieroglyphs are also known for their significance to the Egyptian religion. Without hieroglyphs we wouldn’t know what happened in Egypt: it would still be a mystery without words to describe them or others, or their wars. Hieroglyphs are also important to us because they tell us all we know about them and about their culture. In fact, the Egyptians called their writing the words of God.” And that is how hieroglyphs are important because of their significance.

Conclusion Finally this is why, out of all the legacies that Egypt has, hieroglyphs are among the most important. In closing, knowing about hieroglyphs is so important because of their origin, their significance and their contribution to our knowledge of Ancient Egypt. I hope you enjoyed it!
