Status of MIRS Updates Kevin Garrett and Sid-Ahmed Boukabara MIRS Meeting February 15, 2008

Status of MIRS Validation  Extension of MIRS validation with RAOB to website. Use ICDB dataset radiosonde records Generic collocation program to collocate n18/MetOp-A FMSDRs with radiosonde (metadata) Generation of statistical plots for website display  Source-code package ready Need script functions to control inputs  Will be extended to other datasets/retrievals as they become available ECMWF, COSMIC SSMI/S

Science Improvements - CRTM Interface MIRS fwd.f90 to new CRTM  New subroutine in FwdOper module (intrFaceCRTM)  Error in CRTM LEVEL indexing caused bias/stddev > for some channels compared to previous CRTM  Correct indexing reduced bias/stddev to generally < 0.3 Interface MIRS 1dvar.f90 to new CRTM  Modified subroutine in FwdOper module (FwdOper)  Comparison of jacobians (new and old K) are consistent, but show small differences  Retrievals with new CRTM have difficulty reducing ChiSq < 1  Further investigation required

Science Improvements - CRTM Interface colocNWPwRad module  Still uses FastEM3 for emissivity over ocean  Extended interface to call new FwdOper to return transmissivity for emissivity calculation over land

Science Improvements - CRTM MIRS Repository Impact  Updated programs/modules 1dvar.f90, fwd.f90, colocNWPwRad.f90,FwdOper.f90 Src/CRTMp replaced New CRTM src code is downloaded and compiled once  Creates src/CRTM/include, src/CRTM/lib  MIRS makefiles modified to link new CRTM library  Need to retain FastEM3.f90 (not included in latest CRTM package)

MicroRad 2008 Update NOAA-08: An Optimal Atmospheric Dataset for Algorithm Training and Covariance Matrix Generation  Contains highly QC’d profiles from IGRA, Dropsonde, COSMIC, ECMWF, GDAS, MM5  Readers for IGRA, Dropsonde, GDAS, MM5  Need to finish preliminary data collection Theoretical study of the impact of scanning geometry on microwave sounding of temperature and humidity  Need to start simulations of NOAA-88 set over various surface types  Retrievals using AMSU/MHS, SSMI/S channels with instrument configured as conical (fixed scan angle) and cross-track (variable scan angle)  Will extend simulations/retrievals to NOAA-08 dataset once established (time permitting)
