BLOG Subject: Complementary Therapies 36% of adults use some form of Complementary therapies (CAM) Complementary Alternative Medicine in their daily lives. Relaxation techniques are the mainstay of CAM. Relaxation techniques include but are not limited to meditation, hypnotherapy, visual imagery, music therapy and deep breathing. Children also are excellent candidates using CAM especially hypnotherapies and visual imagery; children see their world thru vivid imagination and dreams.

PRIMARY RESEARCH SECONDARY Primary research (also call field research) involves what already exits. Questionnaire surveys Interviews: informal or structured Observation: Participant Secondary research (also known as desk research) involves the summary, collation and/or synthesis of existing research. ADULTS & PEDIATRICS A d u l t s ’ Create an environment that would allow patients an option to have complementary therapies pre-operatively and postoperatively.

Pediatric Population The pediatric population are excellent subjects for complementary therapies. Children live in a wonderful world of wonderment and imagination.

Pediatrics Article taken from Nurse Week “No More Tears” by Janet Kilgore RN Demonstrated that there was a reduction in children’s postoperative pain and anxiety with the use of medicine and imagery tools such as videos, audiotapes, relaxation, and imagery techniques pre and postoperative. 11/painmgmtprogram.asp 11/painmgmtprogram.asp

Adult Patients Adult patients are increasingly using complementary and alternative medicine. Research shown by well renowned physicians Dr. Dean Ornish, MD Dr. Herbert Benson, MD Both has shown that relaxation training decreases the body’s response to norepenephrine, which is hormone released in reaction to stress.

Why do patients turn to complementary medicine 250 patients from three complementary practices surveyed stated, 1. “ I value the emphasis on treating the whole person.” 2. “ I believe complementary therapy will be more effective for my problem than orthodox medicine.” 3. “ I believe that complementary medicine will enable me to take a more active part in maintaining my health.” Department of Psychology, University College London,UK. BR J Clin Psychol Feb;35 (pt 1):37-48

Nursing and the Patient Combination of traditional medicine and complementary therapies would be a better way to serve our patient population. By focusing on general outcomes of reducing pain and anxiety nurses would not only be empowering themselves but would also be empowering our patients to participate in their own healing process.
