France in the New World France became envious of the wealth and possessions acquired by Spain and Portugal. She therefore financed a number of expeditions to explore the “New World.”

Motives for French Exploration 1. Northwest Passage - (France hoped to find a passage to the Indies through the New World) – (Gold) 1. Empire - Build overseas empire based on fur trade and fishing. (Glory) 1. Religion - Convert Native Americans to Catholic Religion. (God)

The French Empire in America As a result of her exploration, France claimed Canada, the Great Lakes region, and the Mississippi River Valley. Control of the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence River and the Mississippi River System gave France a natural highway to the interior (inside) of North America.

The Dutch in the New World In 1581, the Dutch took steps to obtain a share of the rich trade with the Far East. In 1609, a group of Dutch Merchants hired Henry Hudson to find a northwest passage.
