Sustainable Management What is meant by the term sustainable management? Meets the needs of the current population without compromising the needs of future generations.

Amazon Deforestation We are losing 137 plant, animal and insect species every single day due to rainforest deforestation. While 25% of Western pharmaceuticals are derived from rainforest ingredients, less that 1% of these tropical trees and plants have been tested by scientists. European colonists have destroyed more than 90 indigenous tribes since the 1900's.

TASK How can rainforests be managed sustainably? Write 3 – 5 ideas each.

National Parks These areas of the Amazon are protected, with no development or conversion of land use allowed. This land ensures the survival of the rainforest.

Eco Tourism In recent years, Peru, Brazil and Ecuador have promoted their forests as destinations for ecotourism. This aims to introduce people to the natural world without causing any environmental damage. The great benefit of ecotourism is that it enables the undisturbed natural environment to create a source of income for local people without it being destroyed or damaged. Watch the YouTube video Ee7I

Usually involves small groups Local guides used Buildings are environmentally friendly Mostly nature based experiences Limited transport available

Designing An Eco-tourist resort for the Amazon Task Draw a labelled diagram of a tourist resort that you have designed to be a perfect eco-tourist resort. Your resort can have any facilities or features that any resort in the world already has. Your resort does not have to be like any existing resort as long as it fulfils the requirements of an eco tourist resort as fully as possible. You should use the feature list below to give you some ideas but you are encouraged to come up with some of your own Think about minimizing impact on the environment encouraging people to learn about the environment and other cultures ensuring the visitors and the hosts both have a positive experience ensuring that local people benefit financially

Plenary You have 60 seconds to summarise your learning from today’s lesson.
