Dorian Gray Written by Oscar Wilde By: Jeremy Daise

About Mr. Gray A painter, Basil Hallward, paints a most beautiful portrait of handsome young man named Dorian Gray. Dorian Gray meets Basil's friend Lord Henry Wotton, who opens his eyes to the momentary nature of his own beauty and tells him that he should experience life to the fullest. Upon the completion of the portrait, Dorian wishes out loud that the painting would grow old, and not him. His wish comes true and the picture begins to age instead of him. Soon after his wish comes true he begins to go on rants or murderous acts.

Conflict Dorian falls in love with Sibyl, and, upon realizing the fact that she doesn't live up to his standards, he dumps her. She kills herself, and instead of mourning her and learning a lesson, Dorian reads the yellow book, listens to Lord Henry, and gets over the whole thing. Soon after this happens Dorian’s picture begins to age and get sick.

Internal Characterization “Truculent and red-faced old gentleman covered all over with orders and ribbons” The most astounding details. Oscar Wilde describes Dorian gray as being a man of defiance. Truculent describes Mr. Gray as being eager or quick to argue or fight. Soon as his pictures starts to age he loses his temper and all hell breaks lose in his rage.

Symbolism “I knew that if I had came face to face with someone whose mere personality was so fascinating that, if I allowed it to do so, it would absorb my whole nature, my whole soul, my very art itself”. The portrait represent the symbolism in The Picture of Dorian Gray, It's a living visible interpretation of Dorian's soul. The picture represents Dorian's inner self, which becomes uglier with each passing hour and with every crime he commits. As his soul becomes increasingly corrupt, its evil shows up on the surface of the paintings surface.
