In p35 1.Where does fusion occur? 2.Why are scientists trying to create fusion on earth?

Fri 9/18 If you were absent last time you missed a lab. See me to make it up! Next time: Quiz #2 That’s me!

Thru: pg 36 Copy the following questions into your notes and answer the questions as we go through the lecture. 1.What is a constellation? 2.Out of the 3 stars, Bellatrix, Betelgeuse and Rigel? a.Which star is closest to Earth? b.Which star is farthest away from Earth 3. Were your answers to #2 correct? Explain. 4.What factors effect how bright a star appears from Earth? 5.When you see a constellation in the sky, are all of the stars necessarily grouped together in space? Explain.

A constellation is a group of stars that seems to form a recognizable shape. Orion is a constellation consisting of 7 stars.

Words in blue are your vocab words Absolute magnitude -How bright a star actually is. Apparent magnitude-How bright a star appears from Earth. Our sun has a medium absolute magnitude but a very high apparent magnitude.

Out p35 Sirius is a large, very bright star that has an absolute magnitude 4X that of our sun. But it appears to be much smaller and dimmer to us on Earth. 1.Why do you think our sun appears much brighter to us than Sirius, even though it is a smaller, dimmer star? (please use the words apparent / absolute magnitude in your answer)
