1-1 Variables and Expressions Algebra One CP2 Chapter 1

Variable- A symbol used to represent unspecified numbers. Algebraic Expressions- An expression consisting of one or more numbers and variables along with one or more arithmetic operation. Factors- The quantities being multiplied in a multiplication expression. Product- The result of multiplication.

Power- An expression in the form of x n. Base- In an expression in the form x n, x is the base. Exponent- In an expression in the form x n, n is the exponent. Evaluate- To find the value of an expression when the values of the variables are known.

Write an algebraic expression for each verbal expression. Ex. 1: m increased by 5 Ex. 2: the difference of x and 9 Ex. 3: twice the sum of 10 and x Ex. 4: 7 times the product of x and t

Write a verbal expression for each algebraic expression. (Do NOT use “plus”, “minus”, “times”, or “divided by”) Ex. 5: ⅓x Ex. 6: x 2 – 40 Ex. 7: 5 ÷ x
