Respect is important…  Thanks to those who have been following expectations!  No transitions/breaks for now, until we can follow the class/school expectations.

Prejudice and Empathy: p  Copy:  Sexism Example: Mrs. Dubose is prejudice against Scout because she isn’t acting “lady-like”  Example of empathy (looking at something from another’s perspective): Atticus doesn’t condemn Mrs. Dubose because he recognizes that she can’t fully control her actions.

TKMB  What example of prejudice do you see here? Jem and Scout are prejudiced against Atticus because he “can’t do anything” because he is too old An example of how inaccurate prejudice and stereotypes can be Movie  Important new theme

V. Theme (Copy) A. Definition: The main idea or message of a story, often expressed as a general statement about life. B. To Kill a Mockingbird theme: “It’s a sin to kill a mockingbird….They don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us.”

II. Ch. 12 Background (Copy) A. Jem matures. He not only has “acquired an alien set of values” but he is “trying to impose them on Scout.” Calpurnia begins calling him Mr. Jem. B. Reverd Sykes—pastor at Cal’s church. C. Atticus refers to the Ewells as “absolute trash.” D. Adult secrets can serve good as well as evil ends. Cal says she doesn’t want her speech to make her appear arrogant towards her friends.

III. Chapter 13 Background (Copy) A. Aunt Alexandra moves in to help out. She has much different expectations than Atticus. B. Aunt Alexandra is concerned with the Finch image. Atticus, however, has nurtured in his children a more individualistic view of one’s identity. Both have merit in different contexts.
