Yesterday we subtracted groups of objects. When we subtracted the objects we made less objects.
We would use the subtraction symbol to let us know we were subtracting the objects.
Sometimes words can let us know we are subtracting.
Let’s try a word problem. John has 3 dogs. One dog ran away. How many dogs does John have left ?
First we can draw 3 dogs for John. 1 23
John has 3 dogs and one dog ran away. How many dogs does John have left? 3 -= 1 2
Tom has 7 slices of pizza. Tom
His friend Jerry ate 4 slices of pizza. What does 7 minus 4 equal? TomJerry
7 – 4 = 3 TomJerry
Sally had 4 glasses of milk. Sue had 2 glasses of milk. SallySue
How many more glasses of milk did Sally have than Sue? SallySue

Pete has 4 pencils. Matt has 1 pencil. Pete Matt
