Good Job!!

Lesson

Yesterday we subtracted groups of objects. When we subtracted the objects we made less objects.

We would use the subtraction symbol to let us know we were subtracting the objects.

Sometimes words can let us know we are subtracting.

Let’s try a word problem. John has 3 dogs. One dog ran away. How many dogs does John have left ?

First we can draw 3 dogs for John. 1 23

John has 3 dogs and one dog ran away. How many dogs does John have left? 3 -= 1 2

Tom has 7 slices of pizza. Tom

His friend Jerry ate 4 slices of pizza. What does 7 minus 4 equal? TomJerry

7 – 4 = 3 TomJerry

Sally had 4 glasses of milk. Sue had 2 glasses of milk. SallySue

How many more glasses of milk did Sally have than Sue? SallySue

4 – 2 = 2 SallySue

Pete has 4 pencils. Matt has 1 pencil. Pete Matt

What is the difference between the number of pencils Pete has and the number of pencils Matt has? PeteMatt

4 – 1 = 3 Pete Matt

Let’s watch! ch?v=v9dx2o7m6GI

Practice!

Let’s work these problems on the document camera.

Let’s practice some more word problems. Have 10 counters to use to help you. You can use beans, coins, blocks or rocks as a counter. action-word-problems-numbers-up-to-9

Good job today! In our next lesson we will learn different types of subtraction equations.

Goodbye! See you next time!
