Holes Scrapbook By: Maddy Gathright Retold By: Mrs. Rogers 1st period

Setting The Setting of this book is at Camp Green Lake but it’s not actually a lake. It used to be but the unbearably hot temperatures dried it all up a long time ago.

Genre & Theme The genre of this book is realistic fiction. The theme, or message, of this book is boys overcoming struggles and hardships at camp.

Characters Stanley Yelnats Hector Zeroni The Warden Mr. Sir Mr. Pendanski Kate Barlow

Stanley Yelnats Stanley Yelnats is the main character in Holes. He is described as an overweight teenager with bad luck. He blames his great- great grandfather Elya Yelnats, but in the end of the book his luck is turned around. He is sent to Camp Green Lake because he is accused of stealing Clyde “Sweetfeet” Livingston’s sneakers. He’s a famous baseball played that Stanley greatly admires. His family is very poor because his father is an unsuccessful inventor that tries to recycle old shoes, specifically sneakers. In the end, they Yelnats’ luck turns around and live a lifestyle of the rich and famous, along with all the other Camp Green Lake boys.

Hector Zeroni Hector, aka, Zero is a boy at camp. He’s described as a short lanky boy with blonde frizzy hair. He can’t read, but in the book Stanley teaches him how. He is sent to camp because he steals a pair of sneakers. Zero doesn’t have a mom or dad, but his mom is still alive and at the end of the book they Yelnats’ find her and reunite them. His great great grandmother is Madame Zeroni, the woman who cursed Stanley’s family with bad luck, but it is all resolved at the end of the book.

Mr. Sir Mr. Sir is a “counselor” at Camp Green Lake. He’s very mean. He stopped smoking a while ago so he’s hooked on sunflower seeds. He gets bossed around by the Warden and will get other people in trouble to get what he wants. I suggest staying away from Mr. Sir, and Camp Green Lake.

Mr. Pendanski Mr. Pendanski is a counselor at Camp Green Lake. He’s described as a tall man with a bushy brown beard and a sunburned nose. He is the leader on Tent D and the boys all call him mom. Though he may seem nice, he’s just as mean as all the other counselors at the camp. MOM!

The Warden The Warden is by far the meanest person in the entire Holes book. She is described as a tall red headed woman with freckles. She wears red nail polish that is mixed with rattlesnake venom. She will do anything to get what she wants and she is violent when that doesn’t happen. She makes the boys dig for “ building their character” but really it’s because she wants to find Kissin’ Kate Barlow’s buried treasure.

My Favorite Character My favorite character is Stanley because he overcomes a struggle and turns his bad luck to good all in one book. 

Problem Situations Zero can’t read so Stanley teaches him how. Stanley wants to be friends with people at camp so when he finds the lipstick tube he gives it to X-Ray. Kate Barlow buried her treasure, so the warden is making the boys dig for it so she an have it.
