Presentation transcript:

The novel that I had chosen is Around the World in 80 days by Jules Verne. The most important moral value in this novel is we must be determined.

Determination is important because it brings out the courage to face life is full of challenges and unexpectedness

Evidence 1 In the novel, Fogg has to face several challenges in order to complete the journey around the world in 80 days. The first challenge that he needs to face is while traveling to Allahabad. Fogg learned that there is no railway line to Allahabad when the train suddenly stops. Fogg decides to walk to Allahabad but Passepartout suggests a better idea when he saw an elephant. Fogg bought the elephant, Kiouni and finds a guide, Ali to bring them to Allahabad.

Evidence 2 The second challenge is Fogg, Aouda and Passepartout are brought to face the judge in Calcutta. This is because of Passepartout’s misconduct at the temple in Bombay. Fogg willingly pay Passepartout’s bail because he does not want Passepartout to be jailed and to avoid further delay to his journey.

Evidence 3 This can be clearly seen in Fogg. Although they had missed the Carnatic to Yokohama, Fogg did not wait for other ships to Yokohama. He finds ways to solve his problem. He finds Tankadere and they set sail to Shanghai and later board the Carnatic.

Evidence 3 Besides, this can be clearly seen in Passepartout too. Passepartout manages to board the Carnatic in Hong Kong. When he realizes that he is alone and penniless in Yokohama, he decides to sell his clothes so that he can have some money to buy food. He is determined to go to America to find Fogg. He joins an acrobatic troupe. He has to wear a long nose and be part of a human pyramid. During the performance, he sees Fogg and they are reunited.

Evidence 4 In this novel, Fogg is determined to travel around the world in 80 days. He wants to prove that it is possible to travel around the world in 80 days. During the journey, he has to fight the outlaws on the way to Omaha and has to save Passepartout from the outlaws. Fogg and his companions still manage to go to Omaha using sled with sails and later a train to Chicago. Then, Fogg and his companions take another train to New York. Although, he has missed the China, but Fogg finds ways to overcome his problem. He manages to hire a ship, Henrietta.

Evidence 5 Although the captain of Henrietta refuses to take them to Liverpool, Fogg still strikes a deal with the captain to take them to Bordeaux. Fogg is determined to go to Liverpool. He tries to convince the crew to take him to Liverpool instead of Bordeaux. He succeeds

Question 1 Choose one of the moral values in the book that you have studied. How does this moral value serve the character? Give evidence from the novel to support your answer. In Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne, an important moral value that is highlighted is calmness and determination. Phileas Fogg is shown as being calm in many situations. He is a very organized and orderly person. He does not show his emotions easily. He calmly accepts the challenge to travel around the world in 80 days. He goes on a sea voyage that is dangerous. But Fogg stays calm and collected. He does not get worried or disturbed. When the Carnatic leaves without him and Aouda, he rationally goes to look for another ship. In America many things go wrong, but we never see Fogg getting flustered. He stays determined and unruffled. He always looks for another way out of the problem. When the bandits attack the train, he fights them. When Passepartout gets kidnapped, Fogg goes to save him. When freed from jail in Liverpool, Fogg punches Fix. This is only time we see him lose his temper. Even when he is too late to win the wager, Fogg remains calm. We see some emotion when Aouda agrees to marry him. Fogg’s calm nature and sheer determination lead him to success.

Question 2 Choose a message that you have obtained from the novel that you have read. State what you have learned from it. In Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne, one message that comes through is the importance of good values. Values like loyalty, devotion, compassion, calmness and persistence are highlighted. Passepartout shows loyalty and devotion to his master. He is a responsible servant and does his duties well. He gets upset every time plans go wrong. He will not believe what Fix says about his master. He says his master is a gentleman and is honourable. Fogg shows that he is also caring for he saves Passepartout when he is captured by the bandits. Both Fogg and Passerpartout show compassion when they rescue Aouda from the men who want to kill her. Aouda is compassionate as she wants Fogg to rescue Passepartout too. She will not leave without these two men who were very good to her. That shows loyalty and compassion. Even Fix is not a complete villain; he helps to look after Aouda. Fogg is very calm and determined to succeed. He tries his best to do the right thing. He is rational and smart. He acts when others do not. He thinks of how to solve the problem and does not allow the problem to drown him. That is his strength. His persistence pays off and thus he succeeds.

Question 3 Based on the novel, “Around the World in 80 Days” by Jules Verne, write about the moral values in the story. Provide evidence from the text to support your answer. There are many moral values in, “Around the World in 80 Days”. Among the moral values are believing in oneself, perseverance and helping each other. This is an adventure story of going around the globe in 80 days. Phileas is a man who is sure of himself and his capability. He is punctual, well-informed, knowledgeable and a gentleman. He makes a wager with Andrew Stuart that the trip around the world could be done in 80 days. This is through his extensive reading of the newspaper and general knowledge. Before he goes on the trip, he comes home with two travel guides to help him with the journey. In India, the railway tracks are not completed. It is short of 50 miles to Calcutta. He is willing to walk that distance if not for Passepartout who sees an elephant to help them with the journey. When the steamers are caught in heavy thunderstorms, he is calm and confident while Passepartout is nervous. He remains calm throughout the entire story. He helps people who need them. He rescues Aouda from the bandits. Later, he is willing to go alone to rescue Passepartout. He is taken prisoner by the bandits in America. Phileas even helps Detective Fix pay for his trip and food while going to San Francisco on the Tankadere. He even goes to Hong Kong in search of Aouda’s cousin, Jeejah Jeejeebhoy. Therefore, there are actually many moral values found in this book.
