About 17 years before Mount Vesuvius’s most destructive eruption (79 AD), there was a very powerful earthquake. This destroyed a lot of land/manmade structures. Some of this damage was not fully repaired by the time that Mount Vesuvius catastrophically erupted.

Vesuvius is a part of a large line of volcanoes (Campanian) which was formed over a subduction zone created by the convergence of the African and Eurasian plates. SO a convergent boundary is responsible for Mount Vesuvius.

The African Plate pushed under the Eurasian Plate. The African Plate was pushed down to deep and hotter parts of the earth and since magma is less dense than the rock around it, the magma was pushed upward.  Vesuvius is a volcano inside of a volcano  Roman mythology called Mount Vesuvius a “hill that anciently vomited fire.”  The eruption of Vesuvius changed the course of the Sarno River  In 79 AD, when Mt. Vesuvius had its most destructive eruption, most villagers ran towards the eruption area because they thought it was safe there.  When archaeologists started studying the buried city of Pompeii, they filled shells of the body’s with plaster to make statues.
