ESEOO meeting, Santiago de Compostela, january 2007 Improved satellite altimetry for the observation of shelf/coastal dynamics The Margins Altimetry Projects

ESEOO meeting, Santiago de Compostela, january 2007 Is shelf/coastal altimetry a realistic objective? problems: - increased space/time sub-sampling: shorter horizontal scales amplified high frequencies - increased error budget: diverging de-aliasing corrections (tides, storm surges, …) data processing optimized for the open ocean (tracker algorithms, editing criteria, sea state bias, etc …) inadequate derivation of high level and/or gridded products (MSSH…) - increased loss of data solutions: - multi-mission approach. - improved data processing - combined data approach: OI methods data assimilation Multi-mission coverage: time repetitivity ranges from 10 to 35 days

ESEOO meeting, Santiago de Compostela, january 2007 A more general issue: the MAP community Concerns for altimetric products are similar for: - shelf/coastal oceanography - high latitudes oceanography (sea ice regions) and glaciology - calibration/Validation (CalVal) - continental surface hydrology (lakes and rivers) Tools and methodologies can be developed with mutual profits: - share of multi-disciplinary expertise - modular developments around a common data processing software - validation through scientific applications (pioneer users) - easier support for production/distribution the MAP community federates tools and expertise from french, italian and english groups

ESEOO meeting, Santiago de Compostela, january 2007 Improved satellite altimetry for the observation of coastal ocean dynamics: a case study for the Northern Indian Ocean. ALTICORE: Satellite ALTImetry in COastal Regions Improved Altimetry in the Northwestern Mediterranean : Comparison of Ocean Dynamics with a Regional Circulation Model A view from multi-mission satelite altimetry over the coastal ocean: a study in the Ligurian Sea and the Corsica channel. Suggestion of a common exercise for in situ CalVal and data consistency Design of the future altimetry missions: a first prototype of an « end-to-end » mission simulator X-track, a new processing tool for altimetry in coastal areas Production of a DEM interpolated under Jason-2 Classification of altimeter waveforms New altimeter retracking algorithm Improvement of the wet tropospheric delay in coastal areas: decontamination of radiometer measurements Local modeling of tides and atmospheric effects

ESEOO meeting, Santiago de Compostela, january 2007 MAP data capabilities 1. Increased amount of valid observations AVISO standard along-track product MAP along-track product Topex/Poseidon data, Ligurian Sea locally more data better track coverage number of data

ESEOO meeting, Santiago de Compostela, january 2007 Conclusions Shelf/coastal altimetry works ! the MAP data processing is being continuously developed and improved by the MAP community the present version is available for a increasing number of coastal/shelf ocean regions it partially improves deep ocean data too! Scientific applications are currently running (publications: Bouffard et al., Durand et al., Renault et al.,Vignudelli et al.) where it would not have been possible with the standard data provide additional validation and test cases for new developments Routine production/distribution and operational systems applications will need financial supports (CNES/ESA/GMES programs? Operational centres?) Integration in AVISO products in the future?
