Vocabulary  Archipelago- a chain of islands  Ring of Fire- a circle of active volcanoes that circle the Pacific Ocean. There are many active volcanoes along the mountains of Central America.  Coniferous-a kind of cone bearing tree, more common in the mountain areas.

United States ran the Panama Canal until The canal helped shorten the trip from New York to San Francisco from 13,000 miles to 5,200 miles. It takes a ship 10 hours to navigate the canal
