The effects of client participation, connectedness, and satisfaction on academic achievement.

(Plan) McKinley is located on the Southeast side of Cedar Rapids, 33 percent minority, and 51% free and reduced lunch. Home of the Bears

(Plan) McKinley has thirty-five African American eighth grade students who were in the Cedar Rapids school district last year at McKinley. About twenty-three percent of these students ended their seventh grade year with a GPA lower than a 1.6. McKinleys Student Concern and School Culture Action Research Teams are exploring whether students GPAs are directly linked to their participation and connection they feel to the school building. Thus, these two team's goals focus on the social and emotional health of students.

Level of Rigor and Consequences The level of rigor is medium – the data being collected is from multiple sources. – high degree of objectivity. The level of consequence is medium –the effects will be long reaching –the level of importance is moderate. It will impact many people, and involve a few resources.

(Plan) What are the different ways in which McKinley can create a climate that will increase participation, connectedness, and satisfaction of staff, students, and parents?

(Do) Our belief is that the more activities students are involved in at school the more connected they are to school. The parents are more involved with school, which in return increases students GPAs.

(Do) Goal By May 2007 McKinleys Social Emotional Action Research team will create a climate that will see increased participation, connectedness, and satisfaction of staff, students, and parents.

Increase the number of MAAAP participants. Jubilee Singers Umoja (Hip Hop Dance Troop) University of Iowa Engineering Program Running Club

(Do) Art Club Student Senate Recycling Club PACT- activities open to all students. Additional Intramural Opportunities.

(Study) We will measure this through parent surveys, student surveys, and staff surveys which will be revised to include level of connectedness within teams and building. We will keep track of parents that participate in activities at school (fieldtrips, classroom speeches, parties, etc.) We will continue to keep track of parent-teacher conferences (who attended). Parents that show up at sporting events. Parents that show up at performances (musicals). GPAs will be collected as well.

(Study) This information is critical feedback from the stakeholders to be used to drive future decision making. The surveys will be at low cost- (copying fee) We will need money to help with funding intramural sports. Surveys will be conducted twice a year, as well as parent teacher conference information. The other information will be collected as they happen.
