He said to his friend, "If the British march by land or sea from the town tonight, Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch of the North Church tower as a signal light, One if by land, and two if by sea; And I on the opposite shore will be, Ready to ride and spread the alarm Through every Middlesex village and farm, For the country folk to be up and to arm." PAUL REVERE the ELDER After the war, Paul opens a metal factory, a copper rolling mill and a hardware store. Paul retires in 1811 at the age of 76 and leaves the businesses to his sons. Paul dies on May 10, 1818 at the age of 83. He is buried at the Old Granary Burying Ground in Boston Paul Revere memorial in the Granary Burying Ground, Boston, Massachusetts
