Moon Notes

Satellites:  Natural or artificial bodies that revolve around larger bodies.  The natural ones are commonly called “moons”.

Mercury and Venus  Are the only planets that do not have moons

Earth’s Moon:  Also called “Luna”  1. age: 4.6 Billion Years  2. atmosphere: none  3. size: about 1/6 the size of Earth  4. rotates on axis: once every 27 days  5. revolves around Earth: once every 27 days.

Moon Phases:  A. Caused by the changing positions of the Earth, moon, and Sun.

Moon Phases:  1. Waxing: the bright part of the moon is increasing in size.  2. Waning: the bright part of the moon is decreasing in size.

Moon Phases:  3. Crescent moon: the bright part of the moon appears less than a quarter.  4. Quarter moon: the bright part of the moon is half visible  5. New moon: the side of the moon facing the Earth is completely covered with a shadow of the Earth.

Moon Phases:  6. Full moon: The side of the moon facing the Earth is completely lit by the Sun.  7. Gibbous moon: The bright part of the moon appears to be more than a quarter.
