Update on RDA & cataloguing standards developments Deirdre Kiorgaard Australian Committee on Cataloguing Representative to the Joint Steering Committee for the Development of RDA Cataloguing and Metadata Libraries Australia Forum 6 November 2009

Standards update  MARC – upcoming proposals  Non-Roman script data in authority records  DDC – current proposals  LCSH – Genre/Form project  IFLA names of persons

What RDA is  A new standard to replace AACR  Designed for the digital world –Instructions will be a Web tool –Instructions cover description of digital resources –Resulting records to be used in web environment  Broader scope –Includes ‘authorities’  Better coverage of resource types –Online resources, visual resources

What RDA isn’t  Not a replacement for MARC21 or the ILMS –Not an encoding standard or library system  Not a panacea for every ill afflicting the catalogue, but … –It will enable improved navigation of the catalogue and improved catalogue displays (more organised, less cluttered)  Not (necessarily) simplified cataloguing, but.. –It will offer the potential of improved efficiency of data creation & maintenance
