MATTER Has mass and takes up space Made of atoms: protons, neutrons, electrons “STUFF”

MIXTURE A combination of 2 or more substances that can be separated by physical means, –Chicken Soup –Rocky road Ice Cream –Soil

PURE SUBSTANCE Something that cannot be separated by physical means (sorting, filtering, heating, cooling), but can be separated by chemical means (burning, chemical reactions). ALWAYS HOMOGENOUS! –Gold –Table Salt

HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE A mixture that has the same composition throughout. –UNOPENED can of soda –Pudding

HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE A mixture in which the composition is not the same throughout. –Chicken Noodle Soup –Italian Salad Dressing

ELEMENT A substance made up of only one type of atom. –Silver (Ag) –Gold (Au) –Hydrogen (H) –Oxygen (O)

An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substance by chemical or physical means. All matter is made from one or more elements.

COMPOUND A pure substance that is made of 2 or more elements –Table Salt (NaCl) –Rock Salt (CaCl 2 ) –Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)
