COMPOSTING TURN GARBAGE INTO GOLD SHERRIE SHAN

WHAT IS COMPOSTING Composting is a natural process that turns organic material into a dark rich substance. This substance, called compost or humus, is a wonderful conditioner for your soil. What are organic materials: fruits and vegetables, eggshells, coffee grounds, grass clippings, yard trimmings, leaves, wood chips, sawdust… Four important ingredients: Green materials (Nitrogen) Brown materials (Carbon) Moisture (Water) Air (Oxygen)  Carbon-to-Nitrogen Ratios

WHY COMPOSTING 25% of garbage in the U.S. is made up of yard trimmings and food scraps It fills up more and more landfills Landfill methane is a greenhouse gas that cause global warming When landfills are rained on, the runoff pollutes lakes, streams, and groundwater sources.

DIFFERENT TYPE OF COMPOSTING Aerobic composting: the decomposition of organic matter in the presence of oxygen. This type of composting doesn’t emit an unpleasant odor and, with the proper conditions, can be completed in a span of two weeks. Anaerobic composting: is a series of processes in which microorganisms break down biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen. Vermicomposting: is the process of using worms to break down organic waste.

HAPPY COMPOSTING! Composting provides a way not only of reducing the amount of waste that needs to be disposed of, but also of converting it into a product that is useful for gardening, landscaping, or house plants.
