What's the Big Idea?

Maps A map is a representation of a place. It is NOT the place. Example: I drew a map of my neighborhood.

Cartographer A person who makes maps to represent the earth. Example: Gerardus Mercator developed his first map in 1569.

account A report or description of an event or experience. Example: I told the principal my account of the fight in the hallway.

Why is a map not a place? People who create maps select the information they want to put on their maps. Therefore, people’s maps can look different from one another. It is the cartographer’s ACCOUNT of a place. For example…
