Semesters and Timetable Semester 1 September - January Semester 2 February - June 4 day cycle with 4 – 75min Periods 1,2,3,4 Being Successful Attendance! Assignments! ‘Study/Review’ nightly

HRSB High School Graduates Students are expected to take: 8 courses in grade 10 *Only 7grade 10 level credits count towards graduation 7 courses in grade 11 6 courses in grade 12 *Must have 5 to graduate For a total of 21 credits

COURSE TYPES ACADEMIC ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) ADVANCED (In Gr. 11) GRADUATION Open

Course Load Grade 11 students will pick 7 Courses and 2 alternates Grade 12 students will pick 6 Courses and 2 alternates Pick courses for both semesters Course changes in September are only done to correct errors or balance course load if possible- so chose wisely!

Course Load cont’ Resource and Learning Centre students should talk with their resource teacher about their course selection

13 Compulsory Credits 3 English 2 Math 2 Science 2 Other from Technology, Math or Science 1 Fine Arts ( Art, Dance, Drama, Music ) 1 Physical Activity ( PAL, Physical Ed, Yoga or Dance ) 1 Canadian History ( Canadian History 11, African Canadian Studies 11, or Mi’Kmaq Studies 10 ) 1 Global Studies ( Global History 12 or Global Geography 12 or Global Politics 12 )

Keeping Track… Keep track of your credits!!!!!!!!!!! What do you have? What do you still need? Students and parents should always know the credit status. It is your responsibility!!!! BUT the Guidance Counsellors help you to keep on track for graduation when you meet with them to choose courses each year.

Compulsory Credits - English - 3 credits required, one from each grade level. Grade 11 and 12 students may be recommended for English Communications, English Academic, or English Advanced. Mathematics -2 required credits from different grade levels. Grade 11 and 12 Students may be recommended for Math Essentials, Math at Work, or Math Academic.

MATH INFORMATION

Compulsory Credits Science - 2 required: a “first science credit” plus any other science course ( Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Oceans, Human Biology, Astronomy). Other - 2 required credits from either: Technology, Science (above the 2 required science credits), Math (above the 2 required math credits) or any combination of the 3 (Math, Science, or Technology)

Compulsory Credits Fine Arts - 1 required credit from either: Art, Music, Dance, or Drama. Physical Education -1 required credit from Dance 11, PAL11, Physical Ed 10, 11, 12, or Yoga 11.

Compulsory Credits Canadian History - 1 required credit from either: Mi’kmaq Studies 10, Canadian History 11, African Canadian Studies 11. Global Studies - 1 required credit from either: Global History 12 or Global Geography 12 or Global Politics 12. The Global Studies credit is completed in the student’s Grade 12 year.

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION 11 and 12 Students earn an Academic High School credit by completing a 25 Hour Classroom Component and a 100 Hour work placement. Students can complete up to 3 COOP Credits. Placements have included physiotherapy clinics, trades, armed forces, banks, retail management, classrooms, service industry, etc. For more information, see your Guidance Counsellor or Mr. Jakeman-

French Immersion Certificate a minimum of nine credits in French Français 10, 11, and 12 are compulsory We offer 9 FI Credits so you must take each of the credits we offer There may be options to do additional French credits in Virtual School, but this is not guaranteed

Advanced Placement classes strive to prepare students for University level work. Students can potentially earn University level credits and/ or recognition. Currently available in Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, English, and Physics. Students prepare for this by taking Advanced level courses in Grade 11. Not too early to think about… Advanced Placement

DID YOU KNOW? Students SHOULD apply to NSCC in their grade 11 year. All programs at NSCC are offered on a first apply- first accepted basis. Students who delay applying may be wait-listed. Come see your Guidance Counsellor for help applying. Students applying to University may do so in their grade 12 year.
