(Peter brings a dead woman back to life through the power of God) Acts 9:36-43 A Disciple Called Dorcas Acts 9: A Disciple Called Dorcas

2. A disciple is someone who follows something or someone. In the book of Acts we learn about the Disciples of Jesus (those who follow Jesus). Some disciples were also alled apostles. An apostle is someone who is sent with a special mission or job. In other stories we learned about the 12 Apostles of Jesus. These were chosen by Jesus and given the power to perform miracles and help people understand that the news about Jesus was true. One of the Apostles was Peter and he travelled to many places teaching about Jesus and helping them learn to be disciples and follow Jesus. A Disciple Called Dorcas Acts 9:

3. While visiting disciples in the city of Lydda the Apostle Peter met a man named Aeneas, who had been unable to walk for eight years. When Peter saw him he said to Aeneas, “Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and take care of your mat.” Everyone was amazed when Aeneas immediately got up and walked! Now they knew that the good news about Jesus was true. They wanted to be disciples of Jesus too. A Disciple Called Dorcas Acts 9:

4. God had given Apostles like Peter special miraculous gifts to help people understand that what they said about Jesus was true. Peter said to Aeneas, “Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and take care of your mat.” Everyone was amazed when Aeneas immediately got up and walked! Now they knew that the good news about Jesus was true. They wanted to be disciples of Jesus too. A Disciple Called Dorcas Acts 9:

5. Meanwhile, in the nearby town of Joppa there were more men and women who followed Jesus. One of these women was Tabitha. In the Greek language her name was Dorcas. The bible says, “Dorcawas s always doing good and helping the poor.” Sometimes she sewed clothes for people. A Disciple Called Dorcas Acts 9:

6. All of the disciples in Joppa were very sad when Dorcas became sick and then died. They washed her body and put her in an upstairs room to wait until she was buried. A Disciple Called Dorcas Acts 9:

7. When the disciples in Joppa heard that Peter was in the nearby town of Lydda they sent two men to go and get him to come to Joppa. A Disciple Called Dorcas Acts 9:

8. When Peter arrived in Joppa he went to the upstairs room. Everyone was crying and showing him some of the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made when she was alive. All of the people missed her because they knew that Dorcas had been a good and kind person. A Disciple Called Dorcas Acts 9:

9. Peter knew it was time to show everyone that the good news of Jesus was true. He asked everyone to leave the room and then he knelt down and prayed. After he prayed, Peter turned to the dead woman and said, “Tabitha, get up.” A Disciple Called Dorcas Acts 9:

10. The woman opened her eyes and when she saw Peter she sat up. Peter took her hand and helped her to her feet. A Disciple Called Dorcas Acts 9:

11. When Peter called the rest of the disciples back in the room they were so happy to see Dorcas alive again. This was a miracle! God’s power could heal people and even raise them from the dead. Peter stayed on in Joppa with a man called Simon. Many more people in Joppa learned about what had happened and they become disciples too. The church grew and grew. A Disciple Called Dorcas Acts 9:
