I AM…  THE NAME OF OUR SHOW WAS I DREAM OF JEANNIE! AND I WAS A GENIE!  PERHAPS YOU KNOW MY FRIEND, ALADDIN AND HIS MAGIC LAMP?

IT’S JUST A FANTASY…IT’S NOT THE REAL THING…  SO WHAT ARE THE ELEMENTS OF FANTASY?  GOOD VS. EVIL  SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF (GETTING LOST IN STORY AND FORGETTING WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO SEE IS NOT REAL)…  IMAGINARY VS. REALISTIC ELEMENTS…EVEN IN A FANTASY, WE SAY TO OURSELVES, WHAT PART OF THIS STORY COULD HAPPEN IN REAL LIFE? WE ASK OURSELVES, “WHAT REALISTIC TRAITS DO THE CHARACTERS HAVE?”  THERE IS A THEME-BIG IDEA-MORAL TAUGHT THROUGH THE CHARACTERS AND THEIR ADVENTURES  THERE’S MAGIC!!!  SIX PILLARS OF CHARACTER ARE EVIDENT (OR VIOLATED)…

BUT SOMETIMES A FANTASY, IS JUST WHAT YOU NEED…  ELEMENTS OF FANTASY CONTINUED:  SPECIAL POWERS  DIFFERENT TYPES OF CHARACTERS EXIST (INCLUDING VICTIMS, EXPLOITERS, TRUTH SEEKERS, EXTROVERTS, INTROVERTS, TYRANTS, GOOD GUYS AND LIARS…  CHARACTERS EMBARK ON A QUEST-MISSION TO SOLVE A PROBLEM (OR INNER CONFLICT).  MY NAME IS VERUKA AND I WANT IT NOW…WHAT KIND OF CHARACTER AM I?

THREE TYPES OF FANTASIES:  MAGICAL HAPPENINGS IN AN EVERYDAY WORLD… SOME FANTASIES HAPPEN IN AN ORDINARY, EVERYDAY WORLD…SOME MAGICAL OR FANTASTIC ELEMENTS OCCUR WITH SOMETIMES PLAUSIBLE (BELIEVABLE) EXPLANATIONS AND SOMETIMES NOT…P.L. TRAVERS’ MARY POPPINS & IAN FLEMING’S CHITTY, CHITTY BANG BANG WERE LIKE THIS. SO WAS MARY RODGERS’ FREAKY FRIDAY!

TYPES OF FANTASIES:  MAGICAL WORLDS…  SOME FANTASIES TAKE PLACE IN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT WORLDS WITH EVIDENCE OF NO CONNECTION TO EARTH’S TIME OR SPACE. J.R. R. TOLKIEN’S THE HOBBIT & LORD OF THE RINGS SERIES WERE LIKE THIS.  AS WELL AS BOOKS LIKE ELLA ENCHANTED…

TRIPS TO MAGICAL WORLDS:  IN SOME FANTASIES, THE MAIN CHARACTERS WANDER, FALL, GET TRANSPORTED OR KIDNAPPED TO ANOTHER WORLD MORE MAGICAL THAN THE ONE HE OR SHE USUALLY RESIDES IN…THE CHARACTERS USUALLY RETURN SAFER AND A LOT WISER FROM THEIR EXPERIENCES. STORIES LIKE THIS INCLUDE LEWIS CARROLL’S ALICE IN WONDERLAND, THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA SERIES AND PETER PAN.

THINKING (& WRITING FANTASY):  FANTASY IS IMAGINATIVE FICTION FEATURING: UNREALISTIC SETTINGS, IMPROBABLE HAPPENINGS AND MAGICAL CHARACTERS…IN ORDER FOR IT TO BE LABELED FANTASY, IT MUST USE ONE ELEMENT OF IMPOSSIBLITY…WHICH IS CONTRARY TO THE PHYSICAL LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE…AS WE KNOW THEM…FANTASY CHARMS AND DELIGHTS…LIFTS THE SPIRITS…SHOCKS, SURPRISES AND ILLUMINATES…GIVES HELPFUL INSIGHT INTO HUMAN NATURE…AND SPEAKS A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE…IT CUTS ACROSS AGES, CULTURES, TIME AND SPACE…

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FANTASY?  THINK ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE FANTASY THAT YOU HAVE READ.  NAME THE BOOK  AUTHOR  WHAT TYPE OF FANTASY WAS THIS? (MAGICAL HAPPENINGS IN EVERYDAY WORLD, TRIP TO MAGICAL WORLD OR LIFE IN A MAGICAL WORLD?)  WHAT ELEMENTS OF IMPOSSIBILITY DOES IT CONTAIN?  WHAT LIFE LESSON DOES IT TEACH? HOW DO YOU KNOW?  TELL WHY SPECIFICALLY YOU LIKED THIS PARTICULAR STORY.  SHARE WITH TURN AND TALK PARTNER.
