Introduction  A field of thousands of movable mirrors called heliostats and a tower.  A receiver at the top of the tower.  Generating electricity from the energy of the sun. 5Solar Thermal Plant Design & Operation Tools 10/10/2015

Previous Capstone Work  Computed solar position.  Mirror specification from user/files/database.  Formation of the field in a grid view.  Solar vector and receiver vector to calculate the normal.  Azimuth and Altitude of the Heliostat. 6Solar Thermal Plant Design & Operation Tools 10/10/2015

Project Abstract  User Interface Enhancements.  Dynamically populating the plant location.  Placing eight mirrors in each cell of the grid.  Compute shading and blocking by changing the distance between neighboring mirrors in a cell. 7 Solar Thermal Plant Design & Operation Tools 10/10/2015

Requirements Improving User Interface. Compute shading and blocking. Sun vector. Normal. Mirror Size (W, H). Distance between mirrors/heliostats. Research on geometry. 10/10/2015 Solar Thermal Plant Design & Operation Tools 8

Technologies Required  Java 1.6  Net Beans  Java Servlet  Java Server Pages (JSP)  JavaScript  XML  Ms-Access  JAVA 3D 10/10/2015 Solar Thermal Plant Design & Operation Tools 9

System Architecture 11 Solar Thermal Plant Design & Operation Tools 10/10/2015

Shading & Blocking 12 Solar Thermal Plant Design & Operation Tools A field of heliostats suffers losses caused by shading and blocking by neighboring heliostats. The shading and blocking should be calculated for different ∆R and ∆Az. ∆R is the radial spacing. ∆Az is the Azimuthal spacing. 10/10/2015

Problem Specifications Find the equation of the plane of target mirror. Find the co-ordinates of the target mirror on the absolute coordinate system. Find the co-ordinates of the source mirror on the absolute coordinate system. Compute the sun vector(X,Y,Z) in the absolute coordinate system. Compute the projections of the source mirror corners with respect to sun vector on to the target mirror plane. Compute the intersection area of the target mirror and the projected plane. 13 Solar Thermal Plant Design & Operation Tools 10/10/2015

Implementation  Once the shading and blocking between two mirrors is achieved it can be implemented on to eight mirrors.  The distance between the mirrors can be varied.  The Shading and Blocking for different values of ∆R and ∆Az are to be noted and stored. 14 Solar Thermal Plant Design & Operation Tools 10/10/2015

User Interface  Populating the longitude and latitude for the selected location.  Dynamically storing the longitude and latitude of new location.  Making it more professional web application instead of website.  Integrating several pages into a single page.  Proper demarcation of steps. 15 Solar Thermal Plant Design & Operation Tools 10/10/2015

User Interface Improvement 16 Solar Thermal Plant Design & Operation Tools 10/10/2015

User Interface  JavaScript and CSS changes, content is central driven.  Simulated Ajax and further enhancements using Ajax.  Code Clean Up.  Make pages look alike.  Removal of unnecessary button clicks. 17 Solar Thermal Plant Design & Operation Tools 10/10/2015

Progress  Work Done: Compiled previous work done. Worked on the User Interface. Research on shading and blocking.  Future Work: Computing the shading and blocking formulas. Research on Java3D utilities. Implementing the formulas for eight mirrors. 10/10/2015 Solar Thermal Plant Design & Operation Tools 18

Team Roles 1. Lakshmi Yogitha Javvadi Team Leader, Research & Design, Website Maintenance and Documentation. 2. Sasya Kodali Research & Design, Website Maintenance and Documentation. 3.
