9 AMERICA’S ARMY: THE STRENGTH OF THE NATION UNCLASS//FOUO What Makes Us Professionals? Our Dual Professions are complementary and are brought together because both professions are grounded in our three Cs: –Competence in the performance of your duties –Character demonstrated in your decisions and actions –Commitment to the mission despite risk, challenge and adversity

10 AMERICA’S ARMY: THE STRENGTH OF THE NATION UNCLASS//FOUO Our Competence To give the best advice—to do the right thing—we must have the fiber to make sure our advice is always candid, timely and accurate. These three foundational requirements are made possible by our legal competence. This legal competence is: –steeped in a Diversity of Practice—which allows us to take on the unknown –constantly being updated with training in our Soldier skills and numerous legal disciplines—these give us currency –educating all of the members of our team, which includes Soldiers and Civilians Our competence is judged by our ability to communicate effectively with our fellow Army professionals

11 AMERICA’S ARMY: THE STRENGTH OF THE NATION UNCLASS//FOUO Our Character We advise and give counsel to the Profession of Arms on both what those leaders can do (and cannot do) and what they should do (and should not do) We are uniquely positioned on the staff to give frank and honest counsel to leaders It takes personal courage and selflessness to give the best legal advice to ensure our Army’s ethical foundation is strong

12 AMERICA’S ARMY: THE STRENGTH OF THE NATION UNCLASS//FOUO Our Commitment Both professions are not about the individual, they are about something bigger: the Nation and protecting the legal process outlined by our Constitution It is about the mission, in both times of war and times of peace We perform our duties with discipline and to standards We must understand, preserve and leverage our Corps’ capacity, regardless of the component, to accomplish that mission We will be ready regardless of the adversity or obstacle
