Magnetization divided by magnetic field vs. temperature T for SmFe 2 Zn 20, SmCo 2 Zn 20, SmRu 2 Zn 20, SmNi 2 Cd 20, and SmPd 2 Cd 20. Inset: low temperature region for SmRu 2 Zn 20, SmNi 2 Cd 20, and SmPd 2 Cd 20. The Sm-based compounds, SmT 2 Zn 20 (T = Fe, Co and Ru) and SmT 2 Cd 20 (T = Ni and Pd), crystallize in the CeCr 2 Al 20 -type crystal structure (cubic space group Fd3m). High quality single crystals were grown by Zn and Cd-self flux methods. SmFe 2 Zn 20, SmRu 2 Zn 20, and SmNi 2 Cd 20 exhibit ferromagnetic order with Curie temperatures T C = 47.4 K, 7.6 K, and 7.5 K, respectively. SmPd 2 Cd 20 is an antiferromagnet with a Néel temperature T N = 3.4 K. No evidence for magnetic order was ob- served in SmCo 2 Zn 20 down to 110 mK. SmRu 2 Zn 20 is a new addition to the rare class of Sm-based heavy fermion ferromagnets with an electronic specific heat coefficient  = 258 mJ/mol-K 2, a Kadowaki-Woods ratio KWR = 4.4 x 10 -7, and a Sommerfeld-Wilson ratio SWR = 2. D. Yazici et al., submitted to Physical Review B Investigation of magnetic order in SmTr 2 Zn 20 (Tr = Fe, Co, Ru) and SmTr 2 Cd 20 (Tr = Ni, Pd) M. Top: A member of our lab demonstrates the properties of liquid nitrogen to undergraduate students. Bottom: Using liquid nitrogen, we discuss and demonstrate the characteristics of a high temperature cuprate superconductor. Education Many individuals at different stages of their careers, including collaborating professors, post-doctoral scholars and numerous graduate and undergraduate students, have been involved in the ongoing research in our laboratory. The breadth of research performed in our laboratory ensures that researchers are trained in a variety of synthesis and sample measurement techniques that provide them with the skills needed to carry out innovative research on challenging problems in condensed matter physics. Outreach Our lab has a strong commitment to educating the community on physics concepts and importance of experimental research. We currently teach an advanced materials physics laboratory course (Physics 133) at the University of California, San Diego. This course requires students to carry out a research project and present the results to the class. We also perform demonstrations at nearby elementary schools each year to display some of the interesting aspects of low temperature physics including the behavior of high temperature superconducting materials when they are cooled into the superconducting state to 77 K with liquid nitrogen. In addition, we give lab tours in collaboration with other outreach programs such as the Young Physicists Program here at UCSD and students visiting as a part of the UC Edge program to encourage historically underrepresented groups to pursue graduate studies.
