Honors and Gen. Chemistry Mr. Howell’s Chemistry Class

Safety In The Chemistry Lab

Essential Question!! To what extent can knowing general lab safety rules aid in the prevention of accidents in the lab??

Objectives Students will be able to: Properly conduct themselves in the lab Come to class prepared to learn Prepare and complete a proper lab report Identify where all safety equipment is located Know what to do in the event of an emergency Know why safety is so important in a chemistry lab Will have safety contract signed by test date

Safety in the Science Laboratory General Safety Rules Ways to prevent accidents Laboratory work Laboratory cleanup Emergencies

NOTICE!! This is a hands-on class that will require you completing over 30 labs so safety is the first concern!! The following rules are here to make sure that you leave this class next year, the same way that you entered this year!! These rules prevent harm to you, the equipment and to your surroundings

Stay focused and pay attention to all written and verbal instructions Read all pre-labs and labs before you show up for each lab Ask questions before proceeding if you are unsure Misbehavior Cannot and Will Not be allowed

General Things Know the location of the following: –Eyewash station –Fire safety blanket –Fire extinguisher –First aid kit –Telephone –Emergency shut-off buttons

Assignment 1 Divide up into groups of no more than four Obtain a sheet of paper and write full names of all group members on the top right corner of the paper Identify all safety equipment, devices or materials found in the classroom and write them on the paper You should be able to find at least 15 different things around the room Use your imagination, think outside of the box!!

Always Wear Lab Apron And Safety Goggles Do Not Wear Contact Lenses In The Lab Never Work Alone In The Lab Wear The Right Clothing For Lab Work

Only Books And Notebooks Needed For The Experiment Should Be In The Lab Read The Entire Experiment Before Entering The Lab Read Chemical Labels Carefully Walk With Care In The Lab

Food, Beverages, Chewing Gum, Cosmetics, And Smoking Are Never Allowed In The Lab Never Taste, Chemicals Or Touch Them With Bare Hands Use a Sparker To Light A Bunsen Burner Be Careful With All Forms Of Hot Surfaces Do not smell chemicals without teacher approval

Do Not Use Electrical Equipment with Frayed Or Twisted Wires Be Sure Your Hands Are Dry Before You Use Electrical Equipment Do Not Allow Electrical Equipment To Dangle From Work Stations Know Fire-Drill Procedures, Locations Of Exits

If Your Clothes Catch On Fire, Walk To The Safety Shower, Stand Under It And Turn It On If You Get A Chemical In Your Eyes, Walk Immediately To The Eyewash Station, Turn It On, And Lower Your Head So That Your Eyes Are In The Running Water If You Spill Anything On The Floor Or Lab Table, Call Your Teacher Rather Than Trying To Clean It By Yourself

If You Spill A Chemical On Your Skin, Wash The Chemical Off At The Sink And Call Your Teacher The Best Way To Stop An Accident Is To Stop It Before It Happens All Accidents, No Matter, How Minor, Should Be Reported To Your Teacher For All Chemicals Used, Take Only What Is needed For The Experiment

Never Take The Chemicals Out Of The Lab Horseplay And Fooling Around Are Very Dangerous In The Lab Keep Your Work Area Clean And Tidy Always Wash Your Hands With Soap Before You Leave The Lab All These Rules Apply All The Time You Are In The Lab

In fairness to others, clean up all glassware, labware and equipment and return to their original position before leaving the lab (other classes use the lab daily) Store all extra equipment used in the proper storage area when finished Failure to comply with all or some of the safety rules may result in the following: –1 st offence – removal from lab and no grade allowed for that lab –2 nd offence – removal from that lab and two others –3 rd offence – removal from that lab and five others –4 th and more offences – band from all future labs

Protect Yourself Eye Safety Wear safety goggles when working with chemicals, flames, or heating devices or if possibility of flying debris If you wear contact lenses let your teacher know

Protect Yourself Proper Attire Keep all long hair tied back Do not wear loose clothing that could catch on fire Foot wear that completely covers the foot is required

Sharp Objects W h e n u s i n g k n i f e s o r o t h e r s h a r p o b j e c t s a l w a y s w a l k w i t h t h e p o i n t s Always cut away from fingers and body Always carry sharp objects with points and tips facing down and away Never try to catch falling sharp instruments Grasp sharp instruments only by the handles

Electrical Safety Only electrical plugs are to be placed into an electrical outlet Unplug electrical equipment after use Keep all electrical cords, wires, and appliances away from water

Heating Safety Never leave a heat source unattended Heated metal and glass looks cool, use tongs or gloves before handling Do not place hot glassware directly on lab desk or in cold water

Remember to… Stay at your work station Maintain a clean work area Read and follow all directions Report any spills, accidents, or injury to the teacher immediately Clean and put away all equipment at the end of the lab period Dispose of waste products according to instruction

Safety Symbols Know safety symbols They appear in your laboratory activities They will alert you to possible dangers They will remind you to work carefully

Chemical Safety Transfer chemicals carefully! Keep lids on chemical containers when not in use When diluting an acid, pour the acid into water Consider all chemicals dangerous

Homework Get safety contract signed Design a lab safety poster (legal sized paper) using three or less safety rules showing the best way to depict safety (see handout) Study for the test on safety!!

Test: - Next week Tuesday or Thursday depending on your class Homework requirement: Learn all terms and concepts learned on this topic including handouts Make sure you have safety contract completed and turned in by your test date.
