10 Components of School Improvement LEA School Support Team Technical Assistance Workshop Supplemental Information August 2010

Title I v. Non-Title I schools in improvement, corrective action, and restructuring The 10 Components of School Improvement is specifically required of Title I schools Many of the10 components of School Improvement are also required under state law for non-Title I schools Each component, in the following slides, address requirements for Title I and non- Title I schools

Component #1 Required for All Schools Incorporate strategies based on scientifically based research that will strengthen the core academic subjects in the school and address the specific academic issues that caused the school to be identified for school improvement

Component #2 Required for All Schools Adopt policies and practices concerning the schools core academic subjects that have the greatest likelihood of ensuring that all groups of students will meet the States proficient level of achievement on the State academic assessment

Component #3 Required for Title I Schools Only Provide an assurance that the school will spend not less than 10% of the funds made available to the school each fiscal year that the school is in school improvement status, for the purpose of providing to the schools teachers and principal high-quality professional development that –directly addresses the academic achievement problem that caused the school to be identified for school improvement –meets the requirements for professional development activities –is provided in a manner that affords increased opportunity for participating in that professional development

Component #4 Required for Title I Schools Only Specify how the funds described in Component 3 will be used to remove the school from school improvement status

Component #5 Required for All Schools Establish specific annual measurable objectives and benchmark measures and targets for continuous and substantial progress by each group of students who are not meeting the States proficient level of achievement on the State academic assessment

Component #6 Required for Title I Schools Only Describe how the school will provide written notice about the school identification to parents of each student enrolled in such school, in a format and, to the extent practicable, in a language that the parents can understand

Component #7 Required for All Schools Specify the responsibilities of the school, the local educational agency, and the State educational agency serving the school under the plan, including the technical assistance to be provided by the local educational agency

Component #8 Required for All Schools Include strategies to promote effective parental involvement in the school

Component #9 Consideration Required for Title I Schools & Recommended for Non-Title I School Incorporate, as appropriate, activities before school, after school, during the summer, and during any extension of the school year

Component #10 Required for All Schools Incorporate a teacher mentoring program
