An umbrella term for activities undertaken by research institutes, universities and other institutions to promote public awareness & understanding of science, and to make informal contributions to science education. -- Wikipedia Outreach

Some Facts…… Of Walmart’s 6000 suppliers, 5000 are in China. US consumers spend more on potato chips than the government devotes to energy research & development. Bethlehem Steel marked its 100th birthday by declaring bankruptcy. Only 4 of the top 10 companies receiving U.S. patents last year were U.S. companies. IBM’s once promising PC business is now owned by a Chinese company. - Rising Above the Gathering Storm

Charge to the National Academies What actions could federal policymakers take re: science and technology so that the United States can successfully compete, prosper, and be secure in the 21st century? What steps could be used to implement each of those actions? In response, the National Academies formed a committee from leaders in academia, industry and government.

National Science Foundation Merit Review Criteria What is the intellectual merit of the proposed activity? What are the broader impacts of the proposed activity?

Intellectual Merit How important is the proposed activity to advancing knowledge and understanding within its own field or across different fields? How well qualified is the proposer (individual or team) to conduct the project? To what extent does the proposed activity suggest/explore creative, original, or potentially transformative concepts? How well conceived and organized is the proposed activity? Is there sufficient access to resources?

Broader Impacts Advancement of discovery and understanding while promoting teaching, training and learning Participation of underrepresented groups Enhancement of infrastructure for research and education Dissemination of results to enhance scientific and technological understanding Benefits to society Any proposal that does not address these criteria in the Project Summary will be returned without review.

C-MORE Outreach Box Play around with activities Identify the key science concepts Pick one activity -- How would you present it at an outreach event with random visitors walking by? Could you use this activity to introduce your field or about science research/careers in general? Next up: Outreach tips & 2-5 minute presentations

What are Some Tips for Presenting Outreach Activities?

Upcoming Assignments For Jan 30 One assigned ‘national’ reading (Bertrand & Mullainathan 2003 or Moss-Racusin et al 2012) One ‘local’ reading (Trask 1992) Submit project proposal For Feb 6: Read mentoring booklet (buy, borrow or read free online) http:

Mini-Reflection #3 1. How might participating in outreach events benefit your career? 2. How might you present outreach activities differently, as a result of today’s class? Please include your name, enough info so you remember the question, & today’s date (Jan 23) 2
