MSc Workshop “Turning your Topic into a Project” Rob Kemmer

What have I done? How well have I done it? 1.Product 2. Process How have I done it? What did I need to know to do it? Why did I do it? Results Chapter Evaluation Methodology / Design Lit Review/ Background Introduction Conclusions P r o j e c t A I m s Where does it go from here?

Project Aims Outlined in Introduction Refined by Literature / Technical Review Drive the Methodology / Design Demonstrated in the Results Underpin the Evaluation

Different Project Types TypeApproachOutcomes Investigative - > how is a technology used/managed? observation, interviews, surveys useful knowledge, guidance, a design, strategy or business model Development -> software or a system Recognised development methodology / lifecycle useful new or improved system or prototype

All projects can fit the model: Why? What prior knowledge required? How? What? How good?

Task Working in Groups: –Appoint a facilitator –Appoint a spokesperson –“brainstorm” and generate one project idea Then decide: –What background reading / research will we need to do before we can do the project well? –How will we carry out the study / design and implement the software? –How will we show what we have done? –How will we evaluate the work? Use the flipchart paper and pens supplied to record your work
