Lesson 3 Box and Whisker Plots-Part 1 The Box and Whisker Plot is another way to visually display data to analyze further. Below is an example of a Box and Whisker plot
Box and Whisker Plots Math is a what??? The Median The Upper Extreme The Lower Extreme The Upper Quartile The Lower Quartile The middle # when lined up in numeric order The highest number in the list The highest number in the list The lowest number in the list The lowest number in the list The median of the upper half The median of the upper half The median of the lower half The median of the lower half
How to Make a Box and Whisker Plot-Part 1 Today, we will only be figuring the numbers needed to create these crazy looking charts. Tomorrow, we will be actually making the lines, so you need to BRING A RULER. The first step is to find the 5 numbers we talked about on the last slide. Median You already know how to figure this one. Upper Extreme Upper Quartile Lower Quartile Lower Extreme Line your numbers from greatest to least. The top number is your upper extreme and the bottom number is your lower extreme. Divide the list into half using the median as the dividing spot. Find the median of the upper half. This is your upper Quartile. Find the median of the lower half. This is your lower Quartile.
Example 1 Make a Box and Whisker Plot for the following quiz scores: 7, 10, 7, 10, 6, 7, 2, 9, 6, 0, 20, 10, 16, 18, 14, 10, 18, 10, 6, 18, 16, 20, 20, 24, 18, 27, 21, 12, 15, 12, 21, 30, and 21. Median Upper Extreme Upper Quartile Lower Quartile Lower Extreme There are 33 scores total which form halves of 16 each with the 17 th score being the median First, list the scores in numeric order from greatest to least. Because there are an even number of scores in each half, you must average the middle two scores in each half to find the quartiles. Remember, upper and lower extremes are the highest and lowest score in the list. Since they are both the same number, that is your answer. Since they are different, you must average them: 16/2=8
More Examples Students at Horace Mann Middle School were concerned about the speed of traffic on the street in front of their school. The student council asked the city's Traffic Engineering Division to place two radar speed sensors with large digital displays near the street. One display allowed vehicles traveling west to see their speed, and the other was positioned for vehicles traveling east to see their speed. Sample data on the speeds (in mph) of vehicles traveling west were 25, 35, 27, 22, 34, 40, 20, 19, 23, 25, and 30. Speeds of vehicles traveling east were 26, 22, 31, 36, 22, 27, 15, 50, 32, 29, and Median Upper Extreme Upper Quartile Lower Quartile Lower Extreme
Lesson 4 Box and Whisker Plots-part 2 Now that we know how to find the needed numbers, we can continue with learning how to draw box and whisker plots. Here again is an example of a box and whisker plot
How to draw a Box and Whisker Plot 1.Draw and label a number line with intervals. 2.Place dots above the median, upper/lower extremes, and the upper/lower quartiles. 3.Draw a box around the area between the median and the lower quartile. 4.Draw another box around the area between the median and the upper quartile. 5.Draw a line connecting the lower extreme to the lower quartile. 6.Draw a line connecting the upper extreme to the upper quartile.
