FUR TRADE February 2 nd, 2015

HUDSON BAY COMPANY The first fur trade company ever made. Pierre and Medard were 2 fur traders from England. They discovered fur in Canada so went back to England to tell everybody. They told King Charles II. He decided to made a trading company called Hudson Bay Company.

HUDSON BAY COMPANY They set up many trading posts in Canada along the Hudson Bay. Some of the trading posts were: York Factory Fort Vancouver Fort Colvile

NORTH WEST COMPANY Made 100 years after HBC – started in 1783 French people started the company in Montreal, Quebec. These people had to travel very long distance to get fur compared to the HBC.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE 2 COMPANIES 1. NWC moved to places where the aboriginal people lived. These people already have fur that has been hunted. The HBC did not do this. They chose random areas to make their forts. 2. The NWC went for weeks in their boats to get the fur from the aboriginals. The HBC expected the aboriginals to bring the fur to them.

PROBLEMS FOR HBC They expected the aboriginal people who had fur to bring the fur to their trading posts BUT… The NWC went to get the fur from them. Because of this the aboriginals stopped giving fur to HBC and began giving it to the NWC.

FIGHTS BEGAN When the aboriginal people decided to change companies this started war between the French and English people. The fights lasted from 1780 until During this time there was kidnapping Fighting murders
