At the end of this lesson, students will be able to analyze to what extent Native Americans fit into Crevecoeur’s explanation of American identity

What were the political, social, and economic characteristics of Native American societies in the pre-1607 period? How was each society impacted by its geographical environment?

In 4 groups, you will be assigned one pre- Columbian Native American society to research online. You will “interview” an individual from one of these societies to determine the potential of this group to assimilate into the future American societies of the 17 th and 18 th centuries.

National Museum of the American Indian- Collection Search Pre-Columbian Indian Macro-Cultures American Lives in Two Centuries: What is an American?

Students will present findings in a modified Socratic seminar about the particular tribe that they researched.

Read the section on the Columbian exchange.
