Prime and Composite Numbers & Composite Numbers Objective: I can distinguish prime and composite numbers. Created by Kim Balstad/Chris Garrison Sycamore 5th grade (Revised by Marilyn Higginbotham)

Essential Questions What is a prime number? How is it determined? What is a composite number? How is it determined? Which number is special? How is different from other numbers?

Essential Vocabulary What is a composite number? –It’s a number with more than 2 factors. Let’s look at an example: Is 24 a composite number? 24 = 1 x = 2 x = 3 x 8 24 = 4 x 6 24 is a composite number. The factors of 24 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, has more than 2 factors!

Essential Vocabulary What is a prime number? –A number with EXACTLY 2 factors (1 and itself) Let’s look at an example: Is 5 a prime number? 5 = 5 x 1 5 is a prime number. The factors of 5 are 1 and itself 5 has EXACTLY 2 factors! (1 and 5)

The number 1! Now, let’s talk about the number. The number 1 is a special number because it’s not prime or composite. SPECIAL Think about it and be ready to share: WHY is the number 1 neither prime or composite?

Partner Share Turn to your partner and share facts about each of these new terms. What is a composite number? How is it determined? What is a prime number? How is it determined? How is the number 1 special? Why?
