A Roman Centurion

This is a roman sword it is called a Gladius.

This is a roman shield. The hand grip on the back is covered by the metal boss in the middle. The designs probably identify the owner’s unit.

The Romans wore metal helmets, the side flaps for protection were held on by leather strips.

This is the helmet worn by the standard bearer.

On parade!

Roman soldiers were very disciplined and practised their battle tactics regularly.

By having the shields above their heads, soldiers were protected from falling arrows.

The centurion is wearing plate armour. This type weighed about 9kg.
