World of work What can teachers do to encourage students to study STEM subjects? Science teachers and careers advice Tool # WF-1

Overview Aim: to raise awareness of the role of teachers in careers advice and to provide ideas about how to do this well. We will: look at supporting resources; consider how to embed career advice in science lessons.

What happens in your school? What is your role in providing careers advice? Introduction

Embedding careers advice Discuss your personal responses Make a note of your main points

Discussion Share your responses – What could you do to further embed careers information in your science lessons? Nuffield website – “Careers work with young people can consist of many different parts…. Science teachers should take opportunities to relate their subject to potential future learning pathways and show pupils where the subject sits in the world of work.”

Nuffield handout Role models or case studies in lessons; Role play as part of practical: Set the task with pupils in role; Build in career skills development and reflection; Involve a local company and illustrate what they do; Include individual career research activities for students as part of the task; Involve pupils and do some research with them about their own awareness and interest in careers.
