Cornell Notes Key Ideas Main Points Titles of Powerpoint Slides Vocabulary Words Detailed information Definitions of Words Example problems This is YOUR work area Summary of information: This goes at the end of your notes for the day and is a great way to study what was covered. You should synthesize the information into your own words.

Outline Format Contains bullet points of main ideas More Details are underneath Tends to follow speaking more directly Has a similar style to Cornell Makes main ideas more prominent

Helpful Hints for Taking Notes: Do your homework before you go to class. Try to guess what the instructor will talk about. Plus, you end up taking less notes because you already know the information. Keep your notes for each class separate from other classes. If it's possible, keep the notes from each class in a separate notebook binder. You should always leave plenty of space in your notes to add things later.

More Hints: Only write on one side of your paper. It's easier for you to organize your notes later. It's also too easy to forget about notes written on the back of the paper. Don’t write down every single thing the instructor says. Think about what is being said and write down what is most important. Keep your mind working, and don’t be a note- taking robot! If you miss some information, leave some blank space where that information is supposed to go. Fill in the gaps after the lecture. If you’re not sure of something, ask your instructor or classmates.

And More Hints: Listen for signal words from the professor/teacher. (Also notice when things are formatted differently in PowerPoints or on the board; these are HINTS from the instructor) Carry extra pens and pencils to class. You cannot takes notes without a pen or pencil! Write the examples when helpful. Write down anything the professor/teacher writes on the board.

Even More Hints: Pay special attention at the end of the lecture, because a lot of information might be given in the last 5-10 minutes. Consider typing your notes on a computer. When it comes time to study for tests, the Search function can help you locate material quickly. Always take notes from your reading. If you highlight something, write it in your notes. Simply highlighting something doesn’t help you remember the information.

Even More Hints: Use a standard-size 3-hole notebook for your note taking. Spiral notebooks do not allow you to sort and organize your notes for review. Use note-taking symbols to help you write faster. (This is were texting abbreviations come in handy) Spend 10 minutes after class reviewing your notes. At this time you can change, organize, add, delete, summarize or clarify misunderstandings.

AND More Hints: Make flash cards for unfamiliar vocabulary, ideas or concepts. (Hint: Word Parts/Vocab) Re-copying your notes before a test might help you remember important details. Share notes with your classmates. Find one or two other people who will exchange copies of notes with you. Three heads ARE better than one.
