OMNIRAN-3GPP SaMOG Antonio de la Oliva (UC3M) Ivano Guardini (Telecom Italia) Carlos J. Bernardos (UC3M) Loris Marchetti (Telecom Italia)

3GPP SaMOG 3GPP defines how to connect a Trusted Non-3GPP network to the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) Current mechanisms being defined in the S2a Mobility Based on GTP & WLAN access to EPC (SaMOG) This presentation aims at explaining current approaches and possible functionalities to be addressed in OMNIRAN

3GPP SaMOG, What is it? SaMOG is defining how to connect the Gateway controlling the Trusted Non-3GPP network (WLAN) and the EPC This is done through the S2a reference point, currently implemented by extending GTP/PMIP tunnels from PGW to Trusted WLAN Access GW (TWAG)

Trusted Non-3GPP Network 3GPP does not define what is it, neither its internal mechanisms Common understanding: Connection beetween UE and TGW is a L2 transport UE sees the TWAG as the AR This L2 transport can be implemented through several mechanisms (e.g., VPN, VLAN)

Limitations of SaMOG R11 The key requirement of R11 SaMOG is to keep standard 802.11 UEs unmodified Hence several limitations arise: Lack of IP address preservation (no IP mobility) Terminal cannot indicate an APN when connecting to the WLAN (the terminal is connected to default APN pre-configured on the TWAG or in the service profile on AAA/HSS) Terminal cannot establish multiple connections to multiple PDNs Terminal cannot access simultaneously resources in the WLAN and the EPC

Trusted Non-3GPP network features out of 3GPP control In order to use the Non-3GPP access as efficiently as possible there are several functionalities which are out of scope from 3GPP: L2/L3 triggers: Link Up/Down, L3 Attach/Dettach Connection control Resource management: Resource allocation/modification/release Policy enforcement functions Security functions

Features potentially provided by OMNIRAN In a nutshell, OMNIRAN can define how the Trusted Non-3GPP Network behaves up to the TWAG Need to define how to perform the L2 transport (VLANs, tunneling, e.g. SoftGRE) Extra features required for SaMOG R12: handover indication to enable IP address preservation transport of the APN extension of the L2 transport to the TWAG to support simultaneous access to multiple PDNs

SaMOG R12 In R12, there is no more a constraint regarding modifications to the terminal IP address preservation for a single PDN connection Multiple PDN connections support over WLAN/S2a Concurrent support of NSWO and PDN connections Attach to non-default APN Non Seamless WLAN Offload

SaMOG R12 and OMNIRAN The extra functionalities required by R12 SaMOG can also take advantage of the OMNIRAN interface Missing functionalities: Logical interface at the UE, data and control Support for the allocation of the same IP address on different physical interfaces on the UE (e.g. 3GPP and 802.11) Information transfer between UE and network APN, handover indication Extension of the L2 transport to the TWAG to support simultaneous access to multiple PDNs. Independent bearer per APN L2 isolated link Point to point links as PMIP rules

Summary Work at the 3GPP SaMOG groups and OMNIRAN can be complementary OMNIRAN would need to define how the Trusted Non-3GPP network behaves according to requirements from 3GPP Work can be done for both network and terminal sides The use of OMNIRAN can open the door to the use of more IEEE 802 technologies as part of the operator´s RAN in a managed way
